HIKING ADVENTURES INFORMATION

Appalachian Trail Adventures handpicked its hikes out of the 1,000 miles of trails in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The majority of our hikes are in the Green Mountain National Forest along the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail, the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the country.

With over 20 years of experience, we have chosen trails with the best scenic mountain vistas and beautiful forest. Our hike destinations vary from day to day; some are to a waterfall, along a scenic river, to a covered bridge, to a historic mine, to a beautiful vista or a crystal-clear lake. Please note that the footing is uneven on the trails with rocks and roots. However, some of our trails have easier footing but a few are more technical with multiple roots and rocks.

In the fall, we offer some of the most spectacular foliage hiking in New England. We are located close to the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail to provide maximum access to the hiking trails.

In addition to our all-day hike, we also provide a 2- to 4-hour half-day hike covering a distance of 3 to 6 miles (or longer upon request) for guests seeking an afternoon kayaking adventure, a sightseeing tour to a local village or attraction or, for the more adventurous, a caving trip.

NOVICE TRAILS

ATA’s novice hike locations vary, including the Appalachian Trail and the Green Mountain National Forest. The area has a fair number of hiking trails that are relatively flat; however, some are rolling, which means a gentle uphill or downhill section that lasts for brief periods. On our hillier hikes you will gain 600 feet of elevation over a distance of 4 to 6 miles. When your eyes see the rewards, the effort will be worth it. Our hike destinations vary from day to day; some are to a waterfall, to a covered bridge or historic mine, along a scenic stream, to a beautiful vista or to a crystal-clear lake.

INTERMEDIATE TRAILS

The majority of our guided intermediate hikes are in the Green Mountain National Forest along the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail, which provide spectacular vistas. Intermediate hikers will encounter multiple hills, gaining around 600 to 1,400 feet of elevation hiking over a distance of 4 to 6 miles or longer. That is 40 to 60 minutes of climbing hills compared to the advanced hikes, which climb uphill most of the time. We offer both half- and full-day intermediate trails.

ADVANCED TRAILS

The advanced hikes we offer are on the more difficult hiking trails Vermont has to offer. The bravest hikers have the option to traverse along the spine of the Green Mountains to one of Vermont’s highest mountains. A few trails will have rock scrambles, when you have to use both your hands and feet to climb a short, steep rock face. The majority of our advanced hikes go to mountaintop vistas; however, you will encounter waterfalls, lakes and streams on some trails. Hiking distances range from 5 to 8 miles or longer with an elevation gain of 1,800 to 3,000 feet. We offer both half- and full-day advanced hiking trails. Expect to be climbing uphill most of the time on the advanced trails for approximately 60 to 90 minutes on average, with the longer hikes having 2 hours plus of climbing.
